THE AIR CONDITIONER HUMS ALL NIGHT LONG
HO-HEE HO-HUM, HO-HEE HO-HUM
IT’S OCTOBER FORCHRISTSAKE WHAT’S THIS THING DOING ON
HO-HEE HO-HUM, HO-HEE HO-HUM
IT SINGS IT’S SONG, IT AIN’T TWO SWEET
THREE O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING MY BABY’S UP, SHE CAN’T SLEEP
ELECTRICITY’S FRYIN HER BONES
SHE’S FEELIN’ QUAKES FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GLOBE
ANXIETY’S GONE AMMOCK
FEAR SHE’S ALL OUTTA LUCK
NOW SHE’S RUNNIN’ A BATH, DOING ANYTHING SHE CAN DO RELAX
PLEASE GOD WATCH HER BREATH, DON’T NEED NO AQUATIC COLLAPSE
BUT ME, WHO ME? I’M SOUND ASLEEP
BEIN’ CHASED BY MY DEMONS EVERY NIGHT OF THE WEEK
OLD FRIENDS, EX-LOVERS, IN MY HEAD THEY ALL KNOW ONE ANOTHER
SITTIN’ AROUND, HOLDIN’ COURT, TALKING SMACK FOR SPORT
AT LEAST WHEN I WAKE IN A PARALYZED FRIGHT I GOT MY BABY TO CATCH ME CUZ SHE’S BEEN UP ALL NIGHT
01/21/25
Dark and cold, the B44 skates up Kingston Avenue
I think of your smile to keep me warm
The way your lips separate and your teeth do all the work
Dark brown curls hang at your shoulder, like a curtain falling for ovation
I am your audience, my eye’s clapping and jeering as they look into yours,
A universe in themselves, hazel galaxies draining to brown, to the small black of your pupils.
I stare and you ask what
But I don’t have the words and you already know what’s what
You shrug like Tomei, with the left then right shoulder
You bite your lip and I feel at one with the cosmos,
The way that makes me feel so, so much
Things I thought I’d forgotten or would never feel again
Things I’ve never felt before
